Mr MacDonald said the funding is a much needed investment in the Newcastle region creating jobs, contributing to further local economic and tourism growth.

“This is fantastic news for Newcastle, with $855,000 provided to install the necessary infrastructure and technology required to process international passengers.

“These upgrades are essential to support the introduction of any future international services to the airport,” Mr MacDonald said.

Newcastle Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock said “We are very pleased to have been successful in our grant application.  This funding will allow us to complete the fit-out of our dedicated area for customs, immigration, and quarantine facilities.  “Our recent terminal expansion provided us the space for these services, and this funding allows us to bring them to life.”

Minister Barilaro said the project is among 17 successful projects to receive funding from the Government’s Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

“We are making a long term investment to create jobs and improve services for residents to support airports with the greatest capacity to increase visitor numbers, stimulating the NSW regional economy,” Mr Barilaro said.

“Projects include terminal upgrades, apron and runway improvements, investment in airport emergency services, lighting upgrades and other vital works to accommodate more and larger aircraft and to improve safety and services.”
