We believe it is vital that the local community shares in the success story of Newcastle Airport. Therefore the Airport actively engages with its surrounding communities whilst endeavouring to listen to and address their concerns. As part of our community engagement program, Newcastle Airport is working in partnership with its neighbours to help foster a sense of community and pride in the Airport's operations.

Newcastle Airport Schools Program
Now in its fourth year, the Newcastle Airport Schools Program continues to educate stage one (year 1 and 2) students by offering behind-the-scenes tours of the Airport to in support of the transport unit of the Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) syllabus.

Christmas banners
Each year Newcastle Airport invites local schools to decorate festive banners to hang in the terminal during the busy Christmas season. The decorative banners provide a unique opportunity for students to show-case their school, as well as give a bright and colourful welcome to Airport users.

Aviation Careers Day
The Aviation Careers Day is an initiative driven by Newcastle Airport and supported by the aviation precinct with the purpose of promoting aviation and aerospace as primary career pathways. Now in its fourth year, this free-of-charge annual event offers high school students a real taste of the aviation industry. Respected industry representatives conduct behind-the-scenes tours and information sessions; whilst students get the opportunity to speak directly to workers, as well as get up close to aircraft.

Mind Play
Newcastle Airport is proud to support MindPlay, an initiative driven by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health and aimed at helping young people look at mental health issues in the form of a drama competition. Year eleven drama students were invited to write, direct and perform a play with a mental illness theme. A grand final will be held Friday 10 July at the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre, where students will perform and compete to win prizes for their school drama department.
Newcastle Airport is pleased to be involved in this important initiative to promote mental health in our community.

F1s at Newcastle Airport
Newcastle Airport played host to the Newcastle-Hunter final of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge, held 30 September 2009.
A 25-metre race track was set-up in the Airport terminal for students to showcase their F1 inspired race cars and compete for a place at the F1 in Schools national final held later this year. In the production of their designs, students use world-standard 3D software and are involved in all stages of manufacturing, testing and marketing of their race cars.
As a first time host of the F1 in Schools regional final, Newcastle Airport supports the awareness of the engineering and aerospace industry as primary career pathways.

Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation
In 2009 Newcastle Airport chose the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation as its Charity of Choice.
The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation provides grassroot support for local people undergoing treatment for breast cancer. It does this by providing transportation for patients, home and yard maintenance during treatment, Comfort Cushions for post-operative patients and scholarships for the children of families affected by breast cancer. The Foundation is also working towards establishing Virginia's Place - where patients, carers and volunteers of the Foundation can access information, assistance or simply rest between treatments.
Newcastle Airport will once again host its annual Charity Golf Day in March 2010. All proceeds raised from the day will assist the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation in providing Comfort Cushions to more than 550 post-operative patients throughout our region each year.

Surfest
Surfest is Australia's largest festival of professional surfing, held at Merewether Beach, Newcastle and attracts the best professional surfers from around Australia and the world. Held from 11 to 22 March in 2009, Surfest is unique on the Australia surfing calendar and one of only three such surf lifestyle festivals in the world.
Up to 50,000 spectators enjoy the wide variety of surfing events and related activities across the two weeks which culminate in the finals of a four-star World Qualifying Series men’s tournament – the Mark Richards Pro and a women’s World Qualifying Series event, the Maitland Toyota Open – both part of the World Professional Surfing tour.

Civic Theatre Inspirations 2010 – Children’s season
