Background

Early in 2013 Port Stephens Council approved a Development Application for the expansion, and refurbishment, of Newcastle Airport. An $11.1 million grant from the NSW State Government, as part of the Hunter Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF), enabled the Airport to move forward with the development.

The expansion is consistent with the Defence-approved Newcastle Airport Master Plan and gives certainty to the future growth of Newcastle Airport.

The terminal expansion took place in two stages

Stage 1: Construction of a new arrivals hall with international facilities

This was the most dramatic stage of the redevelopment. A large extension to the terminal building was built which became the arrivals hall and has dedicated space for permanent customs, immigration, and quarantine facilities, enabling potential future international services.

Stage 2: Refurbishment of the existing terminal

During this stage, the entire terminal as you know it today will be completely refurbished to become check-in and departures.
