Newcastle Airport flies into the festive season
Thursday 19 December 2019

Newcastle Airport is ready for an influx of festive flyers with Hunter passengers travelling for Christmas expected to take off in numbers from tomorrow.

“It’s the season for travelling and we are anticipating a bumper summer, set to kick off this weekend with the start of the school holidays and the weekend Christmas travellers all taking off,” Newcastle Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock said.

This October saw close to 119,000 people travelling in and out of Newcastle Airport, a 5 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared to the same month last year and the busiest month ever on record. The previous record was broken in 2017 when 115,986 travelled through the airport.

Jetstar and Virgin will be putting additional flights on the schedule over the Christmas week to Melbourne and Brisbane to accommodate for extra travellers.

“So people can relax and be sure of finding a parking spot we have also increased the number of car parking spaces during the year, adding 120 new spaces in our Long Stay 1 car park, to meet the ever-increasing demand for car parking during peak periods such as Christmas,” Dr Cock continues.

The Christmas holiday period is one of the busiest times to travel around Australia so passengers are reminded to allow plenty of time.

“When you’re travelling, remember, we’re doing our best to get thousands of passengers on the right planes at the right time, so don't forget your Christmas spirit!” he said.

“Our helpful Ambassadors and Operational staff will be on the ground to ensure the smooth operation of the airport over this busy time.”

Ends.
