Construction Control, a leading Australian construction company, has been awarded the Newcastle Airport Terminal Upgrade contract. The $110 million project will include significant upgrades to the airport's existing terminal building, providing a world-class passenger experience for the region.

Dr Peter Cock, CEO of Newcastle Airport, expressed his excitement about the project.

"We’re thrilled to have Construction Control on board for this project which is a game changer for our community and is critical for our region as we move towards true global connectivity.

“The biggest beneficiaries of the airport’s upgrade will be the people of the Hunter region. This project is a critical development to support economic growth and we are so excited to have Construction Control onboard.

“We’re also proud of the actual built form being designed and built to target a 5-star Green Star rating accreditation, it will be a landmark building for the region,” said Dr Cock.

Ben Kochanski, Newcastle Airport Executive General Manager Planning & Infrastructure added, “This will be a complex build, continuing to deliver amazing customer experience whilst expanding our footprint by 50% and creating new arrivals and departure processes. It was vital to work with the right partner who had experience in live airport environments.

“Construction Control has an impressive pedigree from Canberra Airport and is doing great work upgrading our Premium Car Park.” said Mr Kochanski.

David Hill, Director and NSW State Manager of Construction Control, added, "We are delighted to have been appointed as Managing Contractor and look forward to working closely with Newcastle Airport to deliver the terminal building that meets the needs of passengers and stakeholders. This is an important project for the region, and we are very proud to be the selected delivery partner."

Work is already underway on the runway to upgrade it to be able to carry wide-body aircraft. Conversations are also progressing with airlines with the ambition of connecting to an Asian or Middle Eastern hub at the expansion project’s completion.

The Newcastle Airport Terminal Expansion is expected to begin this month, with completion scheduled for mid to late 2024. The project is anticipated to create more than 500 construction jobs throughout its life and will provide long-term benefits for the region.

The terminal and runway upgrade in total will create 4,410 jobs throughout the airport precinct after construction. Over the next 20 years, the upgrade and expansion of the runway and terminal will strengthen the region with 850,000 additional visitors and approximately $12.7 billion in economic activity.

The terminal has been designed by Cox Architecture.
