What is happening?
Newcastle Airport is trialling a new layout to the existing road that runs past the terminal forecourt. The existing fence has been removed, and the drop-off/pick-up lane now extends the full length of the forecourt area. The inside lane adjacent to the fencing is a drop-off/pick-up lane, while the outside lane is a transit lane for all vehicles.
Initially the trial will operate for a period of 5-weeks, and if successful the changes will remain in place.
Start date: 12 July 2021 End date: TBA*
*Due to current travel restrictions and low traffic volumes, the trial will be extended with a new end date to be advised once restrictions ease and traffic returns to normal.
Why is this happening?
We would like to make the terminal more accessible for everyone. This new formation is designed to reduce traffic congestion during busy periods. It will be quicker to drop-off and pick-up passengers, making this experience easier and more relaxed.
How will you measure the success of the trial?
A team of engineers will monitor the changes in vehicle and pedestrian traffic before, during and after the trial using existing CCTV cameras installed around the forecourt and access roads.
