Newcastle Airport will provide regional Northern NSW with its primary access into Queensland as the largest airport in the state without Covid-19 travel restrictions.

After Greater Sydney was declared a hotspot by the Queensland government, millions of regional passengers can access the northern state quickly and efficiently via NSW’s second international airport.

Newcastle Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock said the declaration from the Queensland government provided the airport with the opportunity to play a key role in connecting the two states for its regional communities.

“The new services announced last week, the opening of QLD to regional NSW and the progressive reduction in restrictions in Victoria, are all great news for our community in the lead up to Christmas,” he said.

“Interstate flights will offer regional people the chance to finally connect with friends and loved ones, or to get away for that long-awaited holiday. Working closely with our airline partners we stand ready to meet the needs of the region. That’s a big responsibility, and one we take seriously.”

“Our most recent community polling showed that our region is more eager to fly than the rest of the country. We know they are particularly interested in getting to Queensland and we’re confident there will be plenty of demand in both directions once flights recommence next week.”

“We anticipate that family and friends who have been kept apart by the pandemic and resulting border closures will be among the first to fly. Anecdotally that has been the response at Adelaide and Hobart Airports following recent border openings.

Dr Cock also spoke about the significant enhancements that had recently been made at the airport.

“Customers will get to experience our recent $1.5million terminal upgrade that uses thoughtful design to offer dedicated spaces for our business, solo and family travellers. This will make waiting for flight more comfortable and enjoyable.”“We also want to assure everyone that the health and safety of everyone at Newcastle Airport is our top priority. We are a registered COVID Safe business and have implemented aviation industry protocols fully endorsed by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.”

“People looking to book flights can do so with confidence as our partner airlines, Jetstar, Virgin Australia offer the flexibility of a free date change on new bookings.”
