Bonza today got one-step closer to going on sale with the launch of their search to find a local legend in Newcastle.

The country’s only independent and low-cost airline is planning to crown one passionate person as the ‘Bonza Local Legend’ and have them join a group of 16 other legends - one from each destination on Bonza’s route map.

The campaign aims to provide a platform for the airline to work with locals and tourism destination marketing organisations to support inbound tourism to their 17 destinations and 27 routes - 85% of which are not currently served by any airline and 96% of which are not currently served by a low-cost airline.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said our region has no shortage of larrikins and local legends, so Bonza will have plenty of great candidates.

“The campaign is a great way to build excitement in the region as we await the launch of the new airline which will bring with it greater connectivity and convenience.

“We can’t wait for Bonza’s arrival. Our partnership with them creates a great opportunity to help connect our beautiful region with the rest of Australia with less stress and lower costs.

“The future is even more bright with Bonza’s potential to expand their route map – the Whitsundays and Sunshine Coast are hopefully only the beginning,” Dr Cock said.

‘Newy’ locals are encouraged to upload a 30 second or less video to Facebook or Instagram to show fellow Aussies why they should visit on holiday. Legend status means free VIP flights on the first-ever flight from Newcastle (with three other mates or family members).

In addition, Bonza intends to work with the appointed legend to help put the region firmly on the map through a range of other engagements, help identify deserving members of the community to also be on the inaugural flight, join important taste testing of the all Aussie menu and road test the airline’s first ever uniform. The intention is also that the legends get to feature in upcoming video content promoting destinations that locals can visit with a direct low-cost Bonza flight (Sunshine Coast and Whitsunday Coast).

Speaking this morning, Carly Povey, Chief Commercial Officer at Bonza said: “We’re an airline for the many and not the few. That’s why we’re calling on real people to share their travel tips and in turn, help fellow Aussies explore their own backyard. If you’re a legend, larrikin, personality about town - come forward. We’re looking for big hearts, welcoming arms and people who aren’t shy to give it a go and promote their slice of Allstralia.”

“We are about creating new markets for Australia’s domestic tourism industry with a particular focus on regional locations. We’re an airline for teachers, tradies, kids and carers and we want to reflect that in the way we spotlight the many incredible destinations on our route map,” added Povey.

Locals legends are encouraged to throw their hat in the ring by uploading a 30 second or less video to Facebook or Instagram tagging @FlyBonza with #BonzaLocalLegends.
