The inaugural Fly Pelican flight from Newcastle Airport to Port Macquarie departed today at 1:30pm, reducing the travel time between the Hunter Region and Mid North Coast to just 30-minutes.

The new weekly service will fly on Thursdays with fares starting at $85 one way.

Speaking today, Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said the expanding regional network was diversifying travel options open to local communities.

“What we’ve seen over the last 12 months is strong, ongoing demand for air travel to and from our catchment from a number of regional destinations.

“This includes Canberra, Sunshine Coast, Lord Howe Island, and now Port Macquarie.

“This supports our region by enhancing connectivity, allowing customers from regional NSW easier access to the services available in Newcastle and the ability to use Newcastle Airport as a hub to get to where they need to go.”

Also speaking today, Fly Pelican CEO Marty Hawley said the new service will suit people looking to spend an afternoon to attend to business or spend time visiting family and friends.

“The schedule suits people from Newcastle and Port Macquarie looking to spend an afternoon with clients and return home the same evening. It will also offer the opportunity to spend a week away with family and friends.

“Local getaways are becoming increasingly popular, and we look forward to connecting the two regions.”
