Our region has celebrated the opening of the Queensland borders today by flocking to flights to Brisbane and Gold Coast, making it the busiest day the airport has experienced since 9 April 2020.
Jetstar today flew to both Gold Coast and Brisbane, with Qantas also linking with the Queensland Capital. Virgin will resume regular scheduled flights to Brisbane from tomorrow.
Speaking today, Newcastle Airport CEO Peter Cock said early demand for travel north had been strong.
“Whilst a number of these services are scheduled for four or five times a week from Monday, hopes are that all flights will increase to daily soon.”
“This will, of course, depend on demand, but early indications are there is a real appetite for travel to and from our catchment. The fact most airlines are also offering sale fares has certainly helped.”
Dr Cock also sought to reassure passengers their health and safety is the airport’s number one priority.
“We have implemented multiple initiatives to ensure appropriate health and hygiene standards at the airport,” he said.
“This has resulted in Newcastle Airport being accredited as a Covid Safe business through the NSW Government safe business scheme. We have also implemented the aviation industry protocols endorsed by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.
“What’s important for us as an airport is to ensure we are doing the little things that matter to help ensure every passenger feels as safe as possible on their journey. That commitment will never change.”
