The Hunter Region and Northern NSW are set to reap significant benefits after the NSW Government today announced Williamtown as its latest Special Activation Precinct (SAP).
These precincts are unique to regional NSW and bring together planning and investment to focus on growing jobs and economic activity in an area.
The Williamtown precinct will explore up to 10,000 hectares in and around Newcastle Airport and RAAF Base Williamtown. It is one of only five across the State, joining those already announced at Parkes, Wagga Wagga, Moree and the Snowy Mountains.
NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said:
“Special Activation Precincts are about attracting more money to regional NSW, creating job and career opportunities, streamlining approval processes and supporting our regions in the wake of COVID-19 and bushfires.
“Early estimates show that these precincts will create at least 15,000 jobs across regional NSW, but we expect this number to be higher in reality.”
Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock says the announcement demonstrated the State Government’s support for the Hunter Region and ensured Williamtown is set to become the state’s premier location for defence, aerospace and innovation.
“We’re very excited to be a key stakeholder in the Williamtown Special Activation Precinct which cements the region as a national and international defence and aerospace hub.
“With leasing opportunities available now at Astra Aerolab, the precinct will provide ideal conditions for those looking to invest. This development precinct provides facilities located adjacent to both the Airport and RAAF Base Williamtown – uniquely placed to offer a dedicated home for defence and aerospace innovation. It will certainly play a key role in generating the high skilled jobs of the future, benefitting the entire region.
“This forward-looking program from the NSW Government is also aligned to the reinvention of manufacturing in Australia and puts NSW and the Hunter in the box seat. This is very welcome news in the current economic climate,” Dr Cock said.
Master planning for the new Williamtown precinct is expected to commence soon, with extensive consultation across key local sectors including community, business and councils.
